As a past graduate of the North West Regional College in Derry I was thrilled to win a tender recently to create some new promotional videos. The brief was to create dynamic and exciting content that showed off not only the Colleges and the facilities, but also student life. These were to be made using a mixture of aerial filming with my drone, on-the-ground footage with my GH5 and some creative techniques like timelapse and hyperlapses.

It was in 1999 that I joined NWRC as a baby-faced 16 year old and graduated 2 years later with a triple distinction in Media Studies. I absolutely loved my time there and it was here that my love of video and photography was born. The College had recently opened its new state-of-the art media suite and i was lucky enough to be among the first batch of students to be able to use it. I was able to try my hand at everything from creating music videos and documentaries to experience life in a TV studio as a camera operator, Producer and Director. All-in-all a fantastic experience that put me on the path to running my own Creative Media Company today.

The first video was to showcase the 5 college campuses - two in Derry, two in Limavady and one in Strabane and the beautiful towns and cities they are based in. This video was comprised entirely of drone footage and involved some very early (4am) starts in order to avoid flying the drone close to students or faculty.

The 2nd video was to showcase more of student life and the broad range of courses that the College has to offer. This was shot over 2 days and was mostly filmed using my GH5 but also a few drone clips (including some interior drone flights in the rock climbing wall and drama room which was fun!). The video was launched during the College’s Open Week.

Let me know what you think of the videos in the comments below. Or if you have any questions about any of the techniques used to create the videos, again drop me a comment below :)

Cheers,
Tony
