The Cinematic Sky team were delighted to be asked to provide aerial coverage of the Illuminate Festival by Derry City Council. Happening across two weekends the festival featured huge art projections onto buildings surrounding the famous city walls as well as hundreds of performers to entertain the crowds.

Filming a large scale festival in a city centre at night typically poses a few problems for drones pilots - keeping a safe and legal distance from the crowds is always the number 1 priority and for this we worked closely with the events team at Council to secure several safe landing and takeoff zones around the city. To capture the festival properly at night we chose to use our Mavic 3 Cine drone which has excellent low light capacity and 5.1k video resolution in ProRes format (which essentially equates to an extremely high quality picture). Below is a wide-angle drone photograph we took of Derry on the opening night. You can see three of the main festival areas here including the Guildhall, the walls and St Columbs Cathedral.
